Overview

Located along the scenic 56 Main Road in St James, Cape Town, Pizza Shed St James offers an authentic slice of Italy wrapped in a contemporary and welcoming setting. This restaurant stands out not only for its prime beachfront location but also for its commitment to delivering true Neapolitan-style pizza paired with thoughtful design and attentive service.

The menu beautifully balances classic and creative. Desserts like the Tiramisu provide a satisfying finish that complements the savory offerings.

One of the most talked-about highlights is the quality of their dough—long-proofed and gently charred, creating a thin yet airy crust that satisfies both purists and adventurous eaters. The outdoor seating, bathed in sunlight with views of St James Beach, invites diners to soak in the atmosphere while enjoying their meal. Inside, a clean, modern decor featuring a red and white theme ties the space together, enhancing the authentic Italian experience without overwhelming it.

Whether you’re dining with family or grabbing a quick bite via takeout, Pizza Shed caters to a wide audience looking for fast yet quality dining.

Customer experiences further highlight the strong reputation this branch holds. From a local who claims it rivals its Bree Street counterpart to international pizza aficionados calling it Cape Town’s finest Neapolitan spot, there’s a consensus around consistent excellence. Even the loyal fans embracing the lunch specials praise the balance of flavor and texture—from the tangy tomato base to the perfectly melted cheese and thoughtful topping combinations.

Though some may find the homemade lemonade a bit too sweet, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise stellar experience. The focus remains on delivering pizza that transcends ordinary expectations, blending tradition with a modern twist, all in a vibrant community hub by the sea.

In essence, Pizza Shed St James is a must-visit for those who appreciate handcrafted, authentic pizza with a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Its location, menu variety, and dedication to quality make it a standout choice for locals and visitors alike who seek more than just a meal—they seek a memorable culinary escape.

Their pizza is still the best I’ve had! As good as the Bree street branch. The staff were so friendly and helpful. 10/10

As someone obsessed with pizza who's eaten it all over the world, Pizza Shed is currently serving the finest Neapolitan-style pizza in Cape Town in my opinion. I’ve eaten here many times now and it never disappoints (the pizzas at this branch are far better than Bree in my opinion). The long-proofed dough is perfectly shaped, and I always get mine extra crispy for the charred flavours. The service is consistently excellent too - the team are fast and attentive. Ignore the negative reviews - Keep doing what you're doing!

Pizza Shed - St James I am fortunate enough to have a Pizza Shed close to where I live, and as if I couldn’t get much luckier, they have recently become available on Uber Eats too. I will be reviewing both the dine-in and takeout experience. About two weeks ago, my friend and I walked from my home to the Pizza Shed - St James branch. We figured it would be a good idea to get our steps in before our indulgent lunch. It is located right opposite St James Beach. Could you imagine a more prime location? We arrived as it opened, at 12 o’clock sharp, and were greeted by the waiters standing out front. It is quite a large restaurant, and since we were the first to arrive, there were a lot of seating options. We opted to sit outside in the sun. It is also the perfect spot to people watch as it looks right onto the road, if you enjoy that activity as much as I do. The decor is simplistic yet welcoming. Their iconic red and white theme is carried throughout the restaurant. Inside, the tables are white, and the chairs are red and black. Outside, the tables are white, and the bench cushions are white and red. They have really thought of everything, even the tomato sauce cans on the shelves add a touch of red. I really like the design. It feels authentic yet modern. After having a look around and taking a seat on the super comfortable bench, we browsed through the menu. Soon after, our waiter came to take our drinks orders and informed us of their lunch special: R100 for either their Margherita or the Truffle Pizza between 1 and 3pm. Unfortunately, they had no sparkling water, so I tried their homemade lemonade. Personally, I didn’t enjoy it. It was incredibly sweet and had a strong, synthetic taste. I was honestly quite surprised it was homemade. Moving on, I ordered the Forest Pizza (R170), a traditional Neapolitan style pizza topped with artichokes, mushrooms, and olives. Our food arrived in about 10 minutes. Super quick and efficient, I wasn’t complaining. At first glance, my pizza looked like everything dreams are made of. It had the perfect amount of cheese and a generous tomato base. I am all about the base, about that base… It also had a good helping of toppings. Finally, it cooled down enough for me to take my first bite, and let me tell you, it was a spiritual experience. Wow, it was perfectly balanced. The tang from the tomato base and the artichokes, the richness from the cheese, the saltiness from the olives, and the umami from the mushrooms, all on a perfectly cooked pizza dough. I’ve heard mixed opinions about the base. It’s traditional Neapolitan style, so if you don’t like that style, you might not enjoy it. These pizzas have a thin base and a rather thick but airy crust. Personally, I love them. Back to the meal, it was insanely good. My friend and I were absolutely silent for the full duration, thoroughly enjoying our meals. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Delicious pizza, quick service, and great company, but maybe I’ll skip the lemonade next time. I wouldn’t normally review my takeout experience, but this is honestly the best pizza I have ever had, so I thought it worth mentioning. Last Thursday, I ordered two pizzas. Don’t worry, they weren’t both for me! My friend and I thought we would share as we couldn’t decide which one to get. We ordered the Hot Honey and the Truffle Pizza. Fast forward to Monday afternoon, and I am still mesmerised by both. I cannot pick a favourite. If you ever want to share two pizzas, let these two be the ones. I highly recommend alternating between slices. The Truffle Pizza is incredibly rich and creamy, while the Hot Honey Pizza is sweet and salty. It is so nice to have one after the other. They are both the best pizzas I have ever had. Do yourself a favour and try both. It will change your life, for the better. I promise.

I’m a huge fan of this franchise usually, I’ve been to every branch in Cape Town. My favourites being The Truffle & Pepperoni & Hot Honey. Pizza shed conveniently having a WhatsApp line, I decided to order on the phone and collect. I was craving my favourite pizza after being on a no carb diet whole week. I arrived got my pizza and headed to the beach I took my first bite and immediately I realised it just wasn’t the same and what I was expecting. I don’t recall having Shimeji mushrooms on the pizza ever before. The crust was good as always but the toppings really disappointed me, it was as if the tomato sauce was not cooked ontop. I couldn’t taste any truffle I could only smell it. This is my second time ordering from this branch the first time we ordered we sat down and the meal wasn’t as satisfactory as the other branches. I’m quite sad because I really love the truffle usually. Not sure if I want to order from this branch again

A decent cosy space with a range of Napolitanen pizzas. Food: The pizza brims are thick but the central bases are thin. Fresh oregano and basil aromas are great. Drinks: Moderately pricing. Aperol spritz is €5. A moderate selection of wines is available. Bathroom: Poor quality. Quite a contrast to the central dining area. Where & when is best? For summer it’s best to come around sunset and grab a table on the veranda over looking the ocean and sip some vino. Winters are best for inside with cosy candle light tables. Dinner for 2 or 4 is best. Decor: Not Italian style. Thatched chairs and round tables. It does the job but if you walk in the space doesn’t give an Italian restaurant feel. Staff: Friendly. Professional. Prompt. Outlier: You have pay extra for chilli oil and it comes inside a small silver bowl. Not a bottle.

We had a really spectacular lunch of pizza and Devil’s Peak lager. We are die hard fans of a Neopolitan style pizza, especially when the puffy crusts are nice and charred by the wood fire we ordered the truffle mushroom and pepperoni and hot honey so we could share and get the best of both worlds and we were left satisfied and thoroughly chuffed. The ambiance is really relaxed and we loved the natural light that fills the inside area. The staff were really friendly which really made us feel so welcome. We are regular patrons of the Bree and Obs locations, and are thrilled to now have a spot by the beach
